Program Overview

The costume design BFA program will train the next generation of artisans and designers with key technical skills and opportunities to practice their craft in active production environments.  By combining a rigorous sewing program with industry specific design courses, the students will be prepared to work in any number of positions in either theatre or film.  Students will have opportunities to design theatrical productions, collaborating with the director, fellow designers and the actors to create costumes that support the needs of the play.  Finally, each student will graduate with a portfolio that showcases the range of their talents in design and construction of garments and specialty items like jewelry and millinery work.

As a student in the Academy’s School of Fashion, you’ll step into every facet of the industry—selecting fabrics, designing textiles, illustrating concepts, and building brands. You’ll create digital assets, shape marketing campaigns, and plan product launches for a global market. You’ll work with the same tools and technology used by today’s leading labels—thinking across cultures and designing for a worldwide audience. On any given day, you might walk the runway in a live show, draft a press release, design a lookbook, or map out a strategy for sustainable production. Every moment is hands-on. Every project is a step toward your professional debut.

What sets this Program apart

Mentored by world-renowned professionals, our students become creative forces ready to shape brands, launch collections, and innovate at the edge of tradition and technology.

From the runway to retail, they master every facet of the fashion ecosystem: design, merchandising, journalism, styling, product development, marketing, textiles, and costume. Skilled in time-honored disciplines such as sewing and pattern making—and fluent in fashion technology—they create portfolios that jumpstart careers.

Every year, our signature runway show introduces students to the fashion world and press—bold debuts that mark the start of industry-defining journeys.
