Admission Requirements and Process

Minimum qualifications published on the Training page: have a career interest in the trades and be at least 16 years of age (18+ for some trainings, including Equipment Operating, Mechanics, Welding Fabrication and Service Oilers); have a photo ID and Social Security card, for which a passport or birth certificate can also be used. Other documents may be needed if selected. The Alaska Construction Academies page states a stricter 18-and-over rule with a valid government-issued ID, and adds that Heavy Equipment Operating and Heavy Duty Mechanics require a birth certificate, high school diploma/GED and transcripts, a Social Security card and a WorkKeys score of 4 or higher.

Training is free to the participant. AWP's programmes are grant funded by the Alaska Department of Labor & Workforce Development and the U.S. Department of Labor; the site publishes no tuition, and no federal student aid is involved.

Career Outcomes

AWP states that each year over 50% of new Alaska building trades apprentices have taken classes through AWP, and its Apprenticeship Outreach and Rural Apprenticeship Outreach programmes help participants apply to Alaska's registered construction apprenticeships. No wage or placement rate is published for an individual class, so none is recorded.
