Optical Technician School: Train to Help Patients See—and Feel—Their Best

Optical technicians—also known as optometric technicians or ophthalmic technicians—support eye doctors and help patients find solutions that fit their vision needs, lifestyle, and personal style. Through hands-on training, you’ll learn to prepare patients for eye exams, assist with preliminary vision screenings, use specialized diagnostic equipment, interpret prescriptions, fit and adjust eyeglasses and contact lenses, and fabricate or repair prescription eyewear in clinical and laboratory settings.

Although it is not required to work as an optical technician in California, graduates have the choice to pursue voluntary certification upon successful completion of the National Opticianry Competency Exam and Contact Lens Registry Exam administered by the American Board of Opticianry and National Contact Lens Examiners (ABO/NCLE).

ACC’s curriculum helps prepare graduates to pursue ABO certification in opticianry and NCLE certification in contact lens dispensing.

Is the Optical Technician Training Program Right for you?

• This program is taught in a blended format, combining online coursework with only two days per week of in-person instruction. Day and evening classes are available at both the Los Angeles and Ontario campuses.
• Learn to perform pre-screening eye exams and help patients choose the right eye care solutions. Gain hands-on experience in the classroom, in optical labs, and during a 220-hour externship.
• Train to help customers find eye care solutions they love, giving the gift of better vision. You'll get hands-on training working closely with optometrists, preparing patients for eye exams and filling prescriptions for glass and contact lenses.
