Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get started in IT?
Getting started in IT doesn’t mean you need to know everything on day one. Many people begin by learning how computers, operating systems, software, and basic networks work. A PC Support Specialist program can help you build practical troubleshooting skills and confidence so you can take your first steps toward an entry-level IT support role.
Is PC support a good way to start an IT career?
Yes. PC support is one of the most common starting points for people entering the IT field. Support roles help you learn how to solve technical problems, work with users, and understand the systems businesses rely on every day. From there, many IT professionals continue building skills in areas like networking, systems administration, or cybersecurity.
Can I work in IT with no experience?
Yes. Many people begin in IT support roles without previous professional IT experience. What matters most is learning the fundamentals, practicing hands-on troubleshooting, and building confidence working with computers, software, and common technical issues.
Do I need a degree to become a PC Support Specialist?
A four-year degree is not always required for entry-level IT support roles. Many employers look for practical skills, technical knowledge, certifications, and the ability to solve problems. Career-focused training can help students build those skills in a shorter amount of time than a traditional degree path.
What does a PC Support Specialist do?
PC Support Specialists help people and organizations keep their computers and technology working properly. They may assist with hardware and software issues, operating system problems, basic network connections, user accounts, updates, and general troubleshooting. These roles are often an important first step into the IT field.
What IT certification should I start with?
For many beginners, CompTIA A+ is a strong starting point because it covers the core skills used in IT support, including hardware, software, operating systems, troubleshooting, and basic networking. Foundational certifications can help show employers that you understand key entry-level IT concepts.
How long does PC Support Specialist training take?
Training timelines vary, but PC Support Specialist programs are typically designed to help students build entry-level IT skills in a focused amount of time. Instead of spending years in school, students can begin learning practical skills that may help prepare them for support-focused technology roles.
Is PC support the same as cybersecurity?
PC support and cybersecurity are connected, but they are not the same. PC support focuses on helping users, troubleshooting computers, and maintaining everyday technology. Cybersecurity is a more specialized area that often builds on a strong IT foundation. Starting with PC support can help students develop the basics they may need before exploring more advanced IT paths later.
Is financial aid available for the PC Support Specialist program?
Financial aid may be available for those who qualify. Asher College’s financial services team can help students explore available options, which may include federal student aid, tuition assistance, payment plan options, or veteran training benefits, depending on eligibility and program requirements.
How long does the PC Support Specialist program take to complete?
The PC Support Specialist program is designed to give students flexibility while they complete their training. Instead of fixed class times, students can complete coursework on their own schedule and move through the program in a way that fits their responsibilities. Program length may vary based on campus, schedule, and individual progress, so Asher College’s Admissions team can walk you through the current timeline and what to expect before you enroll.
