Program Overview

The Esthiology and Advanced Practice Esthiology programs at Aveda Arts & Sciences Institute Minneapolis are all about getting you trained to be on the cutting edge of esthetics. Our esthetician programs can help you turn your love of skincare into a skilled career. For those who want to dive deeper, Advanced Practice Esthiology covers skills and theoretical knowledge that advanced estheticians and medical estheticians may need.

There’s no better place to start your career in skincare than at our flagship Minneapolis campus, an internationally acclaimed center of learning that is the very essence of what Aveda founder Horst Rechelbacher envisioned.

With both these programs, you can prepare for the state of Minnesota’s licensing exams to become either an esthetician or an advanced practice esthetician.

In this program, you will learn all of the topics in the traditional Esthiology program, plus much more in an additional 500 hours of theory and hands-on instruction. The program is designed to fulfill the training requirements that the state of Minnesota sets out for an advanced practice esthetician.

This Advanced Practice track provides over 200 hours of additional theory knowledge in topics such as the advanced cell histology of the skin, the lymphatic system, skin classification systems, and skin disorders and terminology. You’ll also learn how to consult with a client with an understanding of their medical history.

Another nearly 300 hours will see you learning additional skincare techniques hands-on. You’ll try your hand at dermaplaning and other machine exfoliation, and chemical peels with alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids, trichloroacetic acids, and acid blends. Learn techniques in lymphatic drainage, advanced extractions, and needling. You will also operate equipment to improve the skin texture through electrical energy, sound energy, and light energy.

Designed for licensed estheticians and cosmetologists seeking to elevate their careers, this 500-hour Advanced Practice Esthiology program provides comprehensive training in advanced skin care techniques and technologies. The curriculum focuses on advanced manipulative skills and procedures, including dermaplaning, chemical peels, electrical energy services, advanced facial treatments, skin needling, and infection control and safety measures. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will be prepared to pursue licensure as an Advanced Practice Esthetician.

What sets this Program apart

At this flagship campus of Aveda Institutes, our students come for far more than just skillbuilding. The students at Aveda Arts & Sciences Institute Minneapolis value our focus on wellness—both personal and environmental—and rituals rooted in ancient beauty practices that still resonate today with a modern twist.

Beyond the classroom or clinic floor, students have the chance to participate in two fashion shows during the year: one for Breast Cancer Awareness and another—fittingly for the Aveda brand that walks the talk on environment sustainability—celebrating Earth Month. Our active community also proudly participates in Minneapolis’ annual Pride parade and fest.

It’s not just our physical building that has history, either. The proof points of our program are our noteworthy alumni. Among our distinguished Minneapolis graduates are beauty pros who have made it to the pinnacle of their fields, including the celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Van Ness; David Wagner, founder and CEO of Juut Salonspa; and Janell Geason, global artistic director and educator for Aveda’s makeup division.

Home to one of the nation’s leading Aveda programs, Aveda Arts & Sciences Institute Minneapolis combines strong graduation (85.7%), placement (77.8%), and licensure (94%) outcomes with advanced esthetics training opportunities.*
