Cosmetology

How to apply. Once you have decided to attend beauty school, you apply to the campus and program of your choice. The admissions team gets to know each prospective applicant, schedules an in-person or virtual tour, and reviews each application packet; it also helps create a financial plan and confirms your chosen start date.

Students we serve. In its admissions, instruction, and graduation policies, the institute practices no discrimination based on race, religion, color, financial status, sex, ethnic or national origin, age, veteran status, or sexual orientation.

Full time. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., 33 hours per week. Full-time starts in the January 2026 catalog include August 26, 2026 and November 18, 2026.

Part time (AM). Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., 25 hours per week, with a part-time start on August 24, 2026. The part-time program runs in five phases of 300, 300, 300, 300 and 50 hours, and the order of phases may vary.

Breaks. Forty-five minutes per day are deducted for lunch on days over five hours.

Phases may change. Hours and weeks of each phase may vary depending on the hours needed to complete the program, holidays and missed time. Distance education starts are not scheduled at this time.

Funding options. The institute offers cash payments, student loans, private financing, private scholarships, veterans' assistance and Pell Grants, with financial aid, scholarships, grants, and loans for those who qualify.

Financial planning appointment. The appointment goes over financial aid eligibility, including the differences between funding sources, and, where financial aid does not fully cover tuition, the options for covering the remaining balance. Bring tax, income and savings information, your FSA ID, your driver's license number, any documentation for additional funding, and knowledge of a personal and parent budget.

Cancellation and refunds. Applicants not accepted receive a refund of all monies paid less the $50 application fee, as do students who cancel within three days of signing the contract. Students who withdraw after three days but before classes begin are refunded all tuition and fees except the $50 application fee and $150 registration fee. After classes begin, the school retains those fees plus a share of tuition from the Refund Table: 20 percent within the first 4.9 percent of the program, rising to 100 percent at 50 percent or more, with a $150 cancellation charge. The kit is non-refundable.

Careers. Once students finish the program and pass their exams to become licensed cosmetologists, career paths include hairstylist, salon owner or manager, makeup artist, hair coloring specialist, permanent waving specialist, sales representative, fashion show stylist and film stylist.

Utah licensing. To graduate, a student completes the contracted program hours and course requirements and makes a satisfactory payment arrangement for any debt owed the school. For Utah licensure, the graduate submits an application, pays a fee, is of good moral character, provides verification of graduation, and passes the theory and practical exams with 75 percent within one year of application.

Where the license is accepted. The catalog lists Utah as accepting licensure from its programs; for every other state it is unsure. As of January 1, 2026 the Cosmetology and Associated Professions Licensing Act takes effect, and the catalog notes that specific changes will be identified in a future version.

Downtown Provo. Aveda Institute Provo is located in downtown Provo and offers some of the latest developments in green building. Its clinic floor features modern stations and styling chairs, the shampoo area was designed as a retreat with shampoo bowls and shiatsu massage chairs, and a manicure and pedicure room features manicure tables and pedicure stations.

Classrooms. The institute features five classrooms with full audiovisual support, including a projection screen and a sound system, designed to incorporate both theoretical education and hands-on experience.

The clinic. A diverse array of guests come to the institute for beauty and wellness services, and students perform a spectrum of hair, skin, body and nail services in a salon setting under the supervision of their instructors.

Aveda Experience Center. A retail center for Aveda hair, skin, Pure-Fume and body care, make-up and lifestyle products gives students the opportunity to practice guest service and retailing skills. There is also a resource library, a student lounge, and lockers and workstations.

Wellness. The institute huddles to host a wellness assembly to celebrate successes, review upcoming events and experience a wellness activity to set the tone for the day.
