Instructor Trainee is a Diploma program offered by Bos-Man's Barber College in Shreveport, LA. The program takes 500 clock hours — approximately 3 months full-time, 5 part-time to complete, with a total tuition of $6,630.

Program Overview

Instructor Trainee is 500 clock hours for a licensed Louisiana barber who wants to teach — approximately three months full-time or five part-time.

You need a licence and experience before you start. The catalog requires an active Louisiana State Barber's License and at least six months' experience in the field, and requires the programme to be completed in no more than six months.

Half of it is one block: 250 of the 500 hours are Basic Teaching Skills for Career Education Instructors, covering everything from lesson planning and classroom management to running the student salon.

The day is long — 9:00am to 9:00pm, Monday to Friday.

What sets this Program apart

Women's haircutting is the biggest block in its barbering programme. 350 hours go to basic haircutting, layer cuts, cutting techniques and hairstyling — against 200 hours for men's haircutting and tapering. For a barber college that is unusual, and it matters if you want to work on a mixed clientele rather than a traditional barbershop one.

You must finish the whole theory curriculum before you touch a client. The catalog states that Barbering students "must complete entire theory curriculum prior to entering the student clinic floor and providing service to the public".

Running over your scheduled hours costs money. Beyond 12.375 months for Barbering the school charges $15.00 an hour, and beyond the Instructor Trainee schedule $20.00 an hour, until you reach the required hours — plus a $150 administrative fee. Neither figure is inside the published totals.

Its class day is long, and published. Barbering runs 9:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday; Instructor Trainee 9:00am to 9:00pm. All classes begin on a Monday.

NACCAS-accredited since February 2013, and licensed by the Louisiana Board of Barber Examiners.

Its handbook is hard to find. The school does not link it from anywhere on its site — it sits in the media library unreferenced. Ask for the current one in writing.

Program Schedule

Approximately three months full-time or five part-time, with the campus open 9:00am to 9:00pm Monday to Friday — a twelve-hour day, closed weekends.

All classes begin on a Monday, and the school runs the whole year with open enrolment alongside Fall and Spring quarter intakes.

The published 2026 calendar closes the campus for New Year, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Spring Break (9–13 March), Memorial Day, Juneteenth, a summer break either side of Independence Day, and Labor Day.

Attendance is enforced with fines. Missing a third Friday costs $50 and a fourth $100, and falling below the attendance standard puts you on institutional attendance probation until it is corrected.

Going over your scheduled hours is charged by the hour. The catalog states that if you have not graduated within the scheduled duration you are assessed $15.00 per hour for Barbering and $20.00 per hour for Instructor Trainee until the required hours are attained, plus a $150 cancellation or administrative fee. None of that is inside the published total above — it is the cost of falling behind, and it is worth asking how often it happens.

What it costs. $6,630 tuition, plus $320 books, tool kit and smock, a $110 Louisiana Barber Board registration fee, a $70 graduation application fee and a $100 non-refundable registration fee — $7,230 in total, and it adds up exactly.

Both state fees are higher than the Barbering programme's. The board registration is $110 against $90, and the graduation application $70 against $50 — matching the catalog's separate statement that the instructor's exam fee is $70 where the barber exam is $50.

Other charges the catalog publishes: a $150 termination fee if you withdraw before completing, a $20 transcript fee, a $50 reinstatement fee after an attendance suspension, and a $150 re-entry charge if you return more than 30 days after termination.

And an attendance rule with money attached: a third missed Friday is a $50 fine and a fourth is $100, payable on return.

How you can pay: cash, money order, credit card, Title IV, a loan, or through non-federal agency programmes.

There is no net price calculator. The school participates in Title IV — the catalog names it as a payment method — but its website has only seven pages, all of which were checked, and none contains a calculator or the words "net price". No federal school code is published either. Ask the school for a written cost estimate and for its school code before you file a FAFSA.

Curriculum

The catalog publishes three blocks whose hours sum to exactly 500.

Basic Teaching Skills for Career Education Instructors — 250 hours, half the programme. It covers the instructor's role, time management, authority and motivation; teaching plans and the learning environment; learning styles and principles; classroom management, academic advisement and conflict management; methods of teaching from demonstration and role-play to field trips and interactive lecture; programme review, development and lesson planning; educational aids and classroom technology; effective presentation and questioning; assessing progress, grading and academic counselling; running the student salon with record-keeping and zone teaching; and career preparation including résumés, portfolios, interviewing, professional ethics, compensation methods and licensing requirements.

Professional Development for Career Education Instructors — 200 hours: educator relationships and communication; achieving learner results with special learning needs, learning disabilities and barriers to learning; the conditions for learning; teaching study and testing skills including reading, note-taking, study habits and test strategies; and teaching success strategies, motivation and goal management.

That second block is worth noting. A fifth of this course is about teaching students who learn differently — special learning needs, learning disabilities and barriers to learning are named explicitly, which not every instructor curriculum does.

Plus 50 hours of instructor discretion for strengthening performance, supervised field trips or other related training.

Career Outcomes

Licensing. The programme prepares you for the Louisiana instructor licensure examination, and the catalog states the instructor's exam fee is $70.

You must already be working in the trade to enrol — an active licence and six months' experience — so this is a step up rather than an entry route.

No completion, licensure or placement rates are published in this handbook, and this page does not estimate any. Ask the college for its most recent NACCAS annual report rates in writing.

What to expect as a Bos-Man's Barber College student

Where you learn. One campus, 2724 W. 70th Street, Shreveport, Louisiana.

A twelve-hour campus day. 9:00am to 9:00pm, Monday to Friday — longer than the Barbering programme's, because instructor trainees supervise the student clinic into the evening.

You will teach. The student salon block covers practical skills training, record-keeping, zone teaching and teamwork — supervising real students on the clinic floor.

A much smaller kit than the Barbering course — $320 against $1,990, because you already own your tools.
