Program Overview

The purpose of the early childhood program is to recruit and train early childhood professionals needed to meet current and future industry demands. Full- time students can complete this program in four semesters. Part-time students are defined as students enrolled in fewer than 12 credit hours per semester. Time to degree for part-time students will vary depending upon the total number of hours enrolled per semester. Program curriculum content aligns with the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s Standards and Competencies for Early Childhood Educators which include: • Child Development and Learning in Context • Family-Teacher Partnerships and Community Connection • Child Observation, Documentation, and Assessment • Developmentally, Culturally, and Linguistically Appropriate Teaching Practices • Knowledge, Application, and Integration of Academic Content in the Early Childhood Curriculum • Professionalism as an Early Childhood Educator Individuals are eligible for admission to CVCC if they are high school graduates or the equivalent, or if they are eighteen years of age or older and able to benefit academically from study at the community college, as demonstrated by assessment in reading, writing, and mathematics. All students are expected to complete the requirements for a degree, diploma or certificate must complete an Application for Graduation. The Program Pathway for Early Childhood Development AAS is a tool for students that lists the following items: Students who plan to transfer should consult an academic counselor to verify specific program requirements with their intended four-year institution. While an elective course may satisfy a requirement for a Central Virginia Community College program, it may not fulfill a requirement at a four-year institution.
