Cosmetology/Barbering

Two full-time schedules. Schedule A meets Monday through Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with 4.5 hours of weekly distance education, and schedule B meets Thursday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with 5.5 hours of weekly distance education; each counts 30 hours a week. Theory class runs Tuesday through Friday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., and students clock in by 8:15 a.m.

Start dates. A new class begins on the first Monday and Thursday of every other month, with at most 16 students, after a mandatory new student orientation.

Attendance and leaves. Students keep 95% attendance to avoid going over contract, falling below 85% can lead to withdrawal, and there are no excused absences or make-up work. A leave of absence of 10 to 60 days may be approved for unforeseen circumstances such as serious medical problems, military service or jury duty, up to 180 days in 12 months. The academy closes for New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Pioneer Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

A $50 non-refundable registration fee is paid during admission, and state registration and board exam fees are paid directly to the state and testing agencies.

Financial aid. COLLECTIV Academy participates in the Federal Pell Grant and Federal Direct Loan programs for students who qualify, and in Vocational Rehabilitation funding. The Sandy campus's FAFSA school code is 017313.

Paying for school. Tuition is due monthly on the agreed day, with the first payment on or before the first day of school; a late payment carries a $25 fee and then $5 a day. Payments can be made by cash, check, money order, credit card or non-federal agencies and loan programs, and students who do not graduate by their contract end date pay $100 for each additional day.

Cancellation and refunds. An applicant who is not accepted, or who cancels in writing within three business days of signing, receives a full refund; cancelling later but before classes start refunds everything except the registration fee. After classes begin, the academy keeps 20% of tuition through 4.9% of contracted hours, 30% through 9.9%, 40% through 14.9%, 45% through 24.9%, 70% through 49.9% and all tuition from 50%, plus kit and fee charges and a $150 withdrawal fee. Refunds are made within 45 days, and used equipment, books and supplies are non-refundable.

Careers. Licensed cosmetologists can work as salon stylists or chemical technicians, salon owners, directors or educators, product company sales representatives, platform artists or, with more training, cosmetology instructors.

Career coaching. The curriculum includes personal and professional development, resume development and interview training, and area salon representatives regularly visit to talk about employment. Employment is not guaranteed.

The Sandy campus. COLLECTIV Academy occupies 6,000 square feet in Sandy, minutes from downtown Salt Lake City, with several classrooms, a clinic floor, a dispensary, a retail area, a student break room with a refrigerator and microwaves, ADA-accessible restrooms and parking in front of the building.

Student life. Students wear all black Tuesday through Saturday with an approved apron and closed-toe, closed-heel shoes, keep phones and meals in the break room, and receive free haircuts and reduced-cost technical services while enrolled; immediate family members can receive free haircuts from them.
