Program Overview
Class A Barber, 1,000 clock hours. Students receive training in the art and science of barbering, preparing for graduation, the Texas state licensing exams and entry-level employment.
Course goals. Train the student for entry-level employment as a Barber, Hair Stylist, Platform Artist, Colorist, Sales Representative, Barbershop Manager, or Barbershop owner. As an integral part of training in each domain, students will be taught the theory and practice the behaviors and people skill concepts such as attitude, communication, salesmanship, success psychology, job readiness, and professionalism.
Instruction. The clock-hour education is provided through a regimented set of learning steps that address specific tasks necessary for graduation, state licensure, and entry-level job skills. Equipment, implements, and products are comparable to those used in the industry. Subjects are presented employing lectures, demonstrations, and student participation, and audio-visual aids, guest speakers, field trips, and/or other related learning methods are used in the course.
Training in three parts. Discovery is basic training through classroom theory and mannequin and live model practice; Skill Development continues through salon activities, classroom theory and live model practice; and Career Readiness refines skills for job readiness and career placement.
What sets this Program apart
- Real clients. Diamonds provides clients with low-cost services performed by student stylists supervised by licensed instructors. Students learn how to perform services on real clients, provide excellent customer service, and build their clientele.
- Business tools. Students have access to the technical tools they will use when they set up their own businesses, including how to advertise on social media and online appointment scheduling.
- Hybrid schedule. Two days a week on campus in daytime or evening classes, with the rest of the week's coursework on the CIMA platform.
- Since 2005. Diamonds Cosmetology College was founded in 2005, launched the first Class A Barber program in the North Texas area in 2018, and became Diamonds College.
Admission Requirements and Process
General admission requirements. An applicant must be at least 17 years old; hold a high school diploma, GED certification or official transcript, or complete an acceptable accredited home school program; complete a personal interview with an Admissions representative; complete a signed Enrollment Agreement; and submit all admissions required forms and fees. Documents are needed approximately two weeks before the class start date.
Transfer students. Diamonds College accepts transfer students and may accept up to half of the hours required for licensure, but no more than 500 hours from a prior Cosmetology Operator or Class A Barber course. Out-of-state hours must be evaluated and accepted by TDLR before the Director’s review, and students will not receive credit for prior hours after the class starts.

Program Schedule
Hybrid classes. Full-time hybrid classes run 24.5 hours per week: on campus 2 days per week, 8:30am-4:45pm, as scheduled by educator, plus 9 hours per week asynchronous on the CIMA platform. Part-time hybrid classes run 18 hours per week: on campus 2 days per week, 5:00pm-10:00pm, plus 8 hours per week on CIMA.
Distance education. Hybrid programs are delivered through on-campus and distance education, and distance education is not to exceed 50% of the total program length. VA students are not approved for hybrid classes and attend on campus 4 days per week: 31 hours per week, Monday-Thursday 8:30am-4:45pm, or 20 hours per week, Monday-Thursday 5:00pm-10:00pm.
Starts. Enrollment is every 6 weeks. Diamonds College reserves the right to change or re-arrange entrance dates and class schedules within the limitations of its facilities, and every incoming student receives a required orientation on the first day of school.
Attendance. Students are required to attend a minimum of 80% of the scheduled hours to meet Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements and complete the program within the maximum time frame. The college operates year-round.
Curriculum
Texas curriculum, 1,000 clock hours. The program follows the state required minimum hours in each subject: 700 hours of theory and related practice (up to 350 via distance education) and 300 hours of specialty practice and related theory (up to 150 via distance education), shown below. The textbook is Milady’s Standard Professional Barbering 5th edition.
Grading. Students demonstrate competency in theory and practice through tests, mannequin repetitions and salon activities, and a test is given following each unit of theory study. Grades run A (93% to 100%), B (85% to 92%), C (80% to 84%), D (70% to 79%) and F (0% to 69%). Students must complete all subjects outlined in their program with an average grade of 80%, equal to a grade of C, and accrue the clock hours defined in the enrollment agreement.

Not included. The state written and practical licensure exam fees, and consumable items students buy while in school, at an estimated cost of $100.00.
Financial aid. Diamonds College is accredited and eligible to disburse federal financial aid to those who qualify: federal grants and Direct Subsidized, Unsubsidized and PLUS loans. Its FAFSA school code is 041691. Veterans Affairs education benefits are available to eligible students, and students who are not eligible for financial aid may apply for the college’s interest-free in-house financing, paid in monthly payments.
Cancellation and refunds. A full refund is made to any student who cancels the Enrollment Agreement within 72 hours after signing it, and if the student is not accepted. After the 72-hour cancellation privilege, if the student does not enter the college, not more than $100.00 is retained. For students who withdraw or are terminated within the first 50% of the scheduled course, the school refunds 90% of outstanding tuition during the first week or first one-tenth of the course, 80% after that, 75% after the first three weeks through the first 25 percent, and 50% through the first 50 percent; in the last 50% it may retain 100% of tuition and fees. Books, equipment, and supplies (the kit) are non-refundable once received.
Career Outcomes
Careers. The program prepares graduates for entry-level employment as a barber, hair stylist, platform artist, colorist, sales representative, barbershop manager, or barbershop owner.
Texas licensure. To be eligible for a Class A Barber license, an applicant must pass a written and practical examination, submit a completed application on a TDLR-approved form, pay the TDLR fees, be at least 17 years of age, and complete 1000 hours of instruction. TDLR has contracted with PSI to deliver its examinations; once approved by TDLR for testing, the student contacts PSI to register and schedule the exam.
Employment assistance. Diamonds College offers academic and graduate employment services to students but does not guarantee employment, and it is often contacted by salons, spas, and manufacturers wishing to interview graduates.
Graduation. Graduates complete all required program work, final exams and scheduled hours, meet all tuition and fee requirements, complete the required graduation paperwork and exit counseling if receiving federal student loans, and are awarded a Diamonds College Diploma.
What to expect as a Diamonds College student
Campus. The campus features separate classrooms, salon areas, dispensaries, reception areas, and offices for advisement. They are equipped with audio-visual equipment, a library containing basic and advanced materials, client waiting areas, shampoo facilities, and student workstations, and each student can secure and hold their equipment and supplies.
Physical demands. Cosmetologists and barbers can expect to stand for long periods, and estheticians and manicurists to sit for long periods. Since so many of their activities involve the use of arms and hands, professionals should take steps to ensure proper physical conditioning and rest periods, and they may find it necessary to work long hours.
