Surgical Technology is a Multiple Career Credentials program offered by East Mississippi Community College in Mayhew, MS. The program takes Program-specific sequence to complete.
Program Overview
Surgical Technology is an instructional program that prepares an individual to serve as a member of the surgical team to work with surgeons, anesthesiologists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel in delivering patient care and assuming appropriate responsibilities before, during, and after surgery. This program includes the education of all aspects of surgical technology including the role of second assistant and circulator. The EMCC Surgical Technology mission is to prepare entry-level Surgical Technologists who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession.
The Associate of Applied Science degree for Surgical Technology is a 68-hour program. The program consists of a minimum of 23 hours of general academic classes and 45 hours of ST classes. Students must take all SUT classes in sequential order. An Associate of Applied Science Degree in Surgical Technology will be awarded to the successful graduate of the 12-month program.
The EMCC Surgical Technology Program currently runs from January to December as a 12-month program. Applications open up on August 1 and close October 1.
Admission Requirements and Process
This program requires each applicant to have a minimum composite score of 16 with a sub score of 16 in Reading on the ACT. For any previous college work attempted, a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale must have been achieved.

The Surgical Technology program curriculum is designed for graduates to become nationally certified through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) upon successfully passing the national exam.
