Program Overview

The Advanced Manicuring program at Elite School of Cosmetology is 300 clock hours, 200 core and 100 advanced, preparing students for the Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board examination for the advanced manicurist license. Students learn manicuring and pedicuring, artificial enhancements, sanitation and sterilization, and the anatomy of the skin, nails and muscles.

The program also covers basic accounting, payroll, inventory control, state and federal taxes, public relations, public health and safety, and sales management, so that after passing the exam a graduate is qualified to work in, manage or own a nail salon. Licensed manicurists work as nail technicians, salespeople, sales managers and in med spas.

Elite School of Cosmetology, which now presents itself as Elite Schools, is owned and operated by J.T. The Advanced Manicuring program page does not advertise federal financial aid, unlike the school’s longer Ohio programs, so ask the financial aid office whether it qualifies before counting on aid.

Federal aid. Federal student aid is available to those who qualify, including Federal Pell Grants and Direct Subsidized, Unsubsidized and Parent PLUS loans. File the FAFSA with school code 041859. The school publishes a net price calculator.

Paying. A down payment is due when the enrollment agreement is signed, with the balance paid by payment plan before graduation, by cash, credit or debit card, check, cashier’s check or U.S. money order. Licensing, criminal background check and exam fees are not part of the program cost, and students who run past their contract end date pay an hourly charge for the extra hours.

Cancellation and refunds. The Ohio catalog’s refund table sets the share of tuition owed by the portion of the program scheduled: 20 percent under 5 percent, then 30, 40 and 45 percent up to 24.9 percent, 70 percent from 25 to 49.9 percent, and all of it from 50 percent on. Books, kits and the registration fee sit outside that calculation, and the kit and books are refundable only if returned unused before the first day. Refunds are paid within 45 days.

Curriculum

The catalog’s Advanced Manicuring curriculum: four core subject areas totalling 200 hours and three advanced areas totalling 100, for 300 clock hours, taught from Milady Standard Nail Technology, 8th edition.

Career Outcomes

Licensed manicurists work as nail technicians, manicurists and pedicurists in nail salons, full-service salons and med spas, in product sales and sales management, and can manage or own a nail salon.

The school provides placement assistance to every graduate at no extra charge, posting openings on a student bulletin board and inviting salon owners and employers to speak to senior students, but it does not guarantee employment. Graduates cannot practice a licensed occupation until they pass the state licensing examination.

What to expect as a Elite School of Cosmetology student

The Ohio campuses share one catalog and ownership; any difference is identified by campus. Instructors keep a daily attendance log, and each day combines a theory class, practical demonstrations and practical work under strict instructor supervision. Individual advising on academic, personal and career concerns is available from staff, with referral to outside professionals when needed.

The website lists the Norwalk campus at 230 Milan Avenue, Suite B, on its campus, contact and disclosure pages; the catalog still lists 175 Benedict Avenue, so confirm the address before visiting.

Attendance and progress. Students must attend at least 66.67 percent of scheduled hours, keep a written grade average of at least 75 percent, pass a final written exam and complete the required practical work under instructor supervision. Up to 10 percent of the clock hours in each payment period may be excused. Students who reach the maximum time frame, 150 percent of the program, without finishing may continue on a cash-pay basis. A $100 administrative fee is charged when a student withdraws, and a $125 reinstatement fee applies on readmission.

Calendar. The Ohio campuses close for Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and the day after, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and the day after, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, and follow the Huron County (Norwalk) and Ashland County (Ashland) school boards for weather closures.
