Program Overview

The Physical Therapist Assistant program prepares students with the entry-level skills and knowledge to perform interventions under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist to improve patient’s/client’s mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or lessen the impact of physical impairments or disabilities. Interventions include therapeutic exercise, patient education, manual techniques such as soft tissue mobilization, functional training, gait training, and modalities. Students learn data collection techniques, how to follow a physical therapy plan of care, and how to assess patient/client safety and response to interventions. Effective education and communication skills are practiced to prepare for interaction with patients/clients, families, caregivers, and other members of the health care team. Legal and ethical aspects of physical therapy are explored. Physical therapist assistants (PTAs) work under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist. The vast majority of PTAs work in hospitals or privately owned physical therapy practices. Other areas of employment include home health, schools, and rehab units.
