Program Overview

The Esthetician programme at John Jay Beauty College is 750 clock hours at its campus on Tennessee Avenue in Kenner, Louisiana, just outside New Orleans. The curriculum is the one approved by the Louisiana State Board of Cosmetology, and the programme prepares students to sit the State Board examination and be licensed as a Esthetician.

John Jay has been NACCAS-accredited since 1983. Its stated approach is unusually direct about whose career this is: “At John Jay, it’s not about our brand, it’s about yours” — the college describes its job as helping students find and perfect their own style as beauty professionals.

Teaching is measured continuously rather than at the end. A theory test is given weekly, practical and clinical grades are recorded daily, and every teacher is observed every day. After the first ten weeks, freshman students take a practical evaluation to determine whether they are ready for the clinic floor; in the last ten weeks, advanced students take a practical and written test to determine whether they are ready to pass the State Board exam.

The college is a member of the Louisiana Association of Cosmetology Schools and is licensed by the Louisiana State Board of Cosmetology.

What sets this Program apart

  • Accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences (NACCAS) — and accredited since 1983, which is more than forty years. All four of the college’s programmes are, at exactly the lengths its catalog publishes.
  • The schedule shifts as you progress. You start Tuesday to Friday; once you reach 250 hours, Saturday becomes mandatory and Tuesday becomes your make-up day — so the clinic-floor half of the course runs on the days salons are busiest.
  • Continuous assessment, not one final.

Program Schedule

The Esthetician programme is 750 clock hours, and the schedule changes as you progress.

You begin Tuesday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm. Once you have earned 250 hours, the schedule becomes Wednesday to Saturday, 8:00am to 4:30pm — Saturday becomes mandatory and Tuesday becomes a make-up day. Either way it totals 30 hours a week.

Assessment runs throughout. A theory test is given weekly to all students, and practical and clinical grades are given daily. The grading scale is A 90–100 per cent, B 80–89, C 70–79, and F at 69 per cent and below.

Two evaluations gate your progress. After the first ten weeks, all freshman students take a practical evaluation to determine their preparedness for the clinic floor. In the last ten weeks, all advanced students take a practical and written test to determine whether they are prepared to pass the State Board exam.

Graduation requires completing the 750 hours for this programme. Hours beyond your contract are charged at $8.60 per hour.

Why Accreditation Is Important

John Jay Beauty College is accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences (NACCAS). Separately, the college is licensed by the Louisiana State Board of Cosmetology in Baton Rouge, which approves the curriculum and issues the licences graduates sit for. A state licence is not the same thing as accreditation. The college is also a member of the Louisiana Association of Cosmetology Schools, which is a trade membership rather than either.

  • Recognised by the U.S. Department of Education
  • Accredited since 1983; next renewal January 2028

The college’s current tuition insert gives the Esthetician programme as:

  • Tuition — $6,950.00
  • Registration fee — $100.00
  • Book and kit fee — $1,450.00

Total cost $8,500.00 — exactly what those three lines add up to, and exactly the total the college prints. The registration fee sits inside that total.

The college publishes its payment plan alongside the price: 6 monthly payments of $1,333.33 after a $500 down payment. Money due may be paid by cash, cheque, money order, debit or credit card, the college’s in-house loan programme, or Title IV funds.

Two charges sit outside the total. Hours beyond your contract are billed at $8.60 per hour. And the $10.00 State Board registration fee is paid by money order directly to the Louisiana State Board of Cosmetology, not to the college — as are all State Board fees.

Financial aid. John Jay Beauty College is an eligible institution approved by the U.S. Department of Education to participate in federal financial aid programmes. The Federal Pell Grant is available; grants do not have to be paid back, and the college describes them as the foundation to which other federal and non-federal aid may be added. Forms are available in the school office, and the college is explicit that it is the student’s responsibility to check that the application has been processed. Pell disbursements are usually made in two payments, issued to the school and applied to the student’s account. Net price calculators are published on the college website.

On transferring in: the college accepts up to 500 hours for Cosmetology and 250 hours for the other courses from a licensed school, with tuition, equipment and book charges pro-rated, and an administrative fee capped at 15 per cent of tuition and no more than $100.

$6,950.00 tuition; $8,500.00 in total with the $100 registration fee and the $1,450.00 book and kit fee.

Curriculum

The plan of study below is the college’s Approved Curriculum for ESTHETICIAN, used according to the requirements listed by the Louisiana State Board of Cosmetology. It is the state’s own subject breakdown rather than an internal course numbering, which is why the entries are subject areas rather than coded courses.

The subjects sum to exactly 750 hours — the total the college prints at the foot of its own table, and the same figure NACCAS records for this programme. Two independent agreements are what corroborate the list.

Career Outcomes

The Esthetician programme prepares students for the Louisiana State Board of Cosmetology licensing examination and for work as a Esthetician.

The college lists the salon roles its graduates move into: hair stylist, hair colour technician, permanent waving technician, hair straightening specialist, wig specialist, scalp and hair specialist, skin care expert, manicurist, esthetician, make-up artist, staff coordinator, salon manager, salon styles director and salon owner — in a salon, in a department store or in a salon chain.

Assisting in placement is one of the college’s stated objectives, and student placement services are published in its catalog. Because it is NACCAS-accredited, the college is examined by an outside team of experts at least every six years against standards covering faculty qualifications, curriculum, instructional methods and materials, classroom work, facilities, administration, tuition policies, refunds and advertising.

Graduates who later want to teach can return for the college’s 750-hour Teachers Training programme, which requires a current Louisiana licence.

What to expect as a John Jay student

Expect to be tested every week. A theory test is given weekly to all students and practical and clinical grades are recorded daily — there is no single end-of-course reckoning. Seventy per cent is the bottom of a C; sixty-nine and below is failing.

Expect to earn the clinic floor. After your first ten weeks you take a practical evaluation specifically to determine whether you are ready to work on clients, and in your last ten weeks a full practical and written test standing in for the State Board exam.

Expect your week to change shape mid-course. The first 250 hours run Tuesday to Friday; after that, Saturday becomes mandatory and Tuesday becomes your make-up day. Thirty hours a week either way, but the second half is built around when salons are actually busy.

Expect the State Board to be a separate relationship. Its $10 registration fee and every other Board fee are paid by money order directly to Baton Rouge, not to the college, and the college cannot register you until it holds your birth certificate or licence, photographs, Social Security card and proof of education.
