Medical Laboratory Science

The program follows Keiser's signature one-class-at-a-time model delivered in focused four-week terms, with new classes starting every month. It is offered on campus at select Florida locations, and evening and weekend options are available at select campuses for working adults.

Degree completion requires a combined total of 120 credit hours, of which students complete 60 upper-division credit hours (14 major courses) at Keiser beyond the MLT associate degree. Program length is approximately 40 months and varies with transfer credit; because eligible students have already met substantial requirements through the prior degree, many complete this program in as little as 20 months. Up to 12 transfer credits may be accepted.

The professional phase includes three Advanced Practicum Technique courses (each with a lab, 3.0 credit hours) completed in actual clinical laboratory settings at university-affiliated facilities under professional supervision; placement depends on affiliate availability. All courses must be passed with a grade of 'C' or higher to advance.

The upper-division curriculum spans 43 credit hours of major coursework across clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunology, immunohematology, hematology, molecular diagnostics, laboratory ethics and research methods, plus three supervised advanced practicum courses. Required Courses

Tuition at Keiser University is charged per 16-week semester by scheduled credit hours; full-time enrollment (12–17.99 credits) is approximately $12,408 per semester (Keiser Undergraduate Tuition & Fee Disclosure, subject to annual review). As a degree-completion program, students complete roughly 60 upper-division credit hours at Keiser, which at a full-time pace works out to an estimated $49,600 in tuition for the portion completed at the University. Enrollment also carries a one-time $55 application fee and a one-time $145 registration fee (subject to annual review); science and practicum courses may add per-course resource or lab fees, and prerequisite coursework taken at Keiser would be billed separately.

Financial aid is available to those who qualify. Graduates are prepared for entry-level medical laboratory scientist (medical technologist) roles across a range of settings, including hospitals, clinics, physician offices, reference laboratories, research laboratories, and other health care facilities. With experience, graduates may advance into positions such as clinical laboratory supervisor or manager, blood bank/transfusion specialist, molecular diagnostics technologist, clinical chemistry or microbiology specialist, public health laboratory scientist, and laboratory educator.

The curriculum is designed to prepare graduates to sit for national certification examinations at the medical laboratory scientist / medical technologist level, such as the MLS (ASCP) credential offered by national certifying agencies. Certification and licensure are not required as a condition of graduation from Keiser; however, graduates must meet the current criteria and regulations for licensure by the State of Florida to obtain gainful employment as a medical laboratory scientist/medical technologist in Florida.

Expect a focused, laboratory-intensive experience that takes one course at a time in four-week terms, so you concentrate on a single subject before moving to the next. Because this is a degree-completion track for MLT graduates, coursework starts at the upper-division level and moves quickly through advanced clinical chemistry, microbiology, parasitology/mycology, immunology, immunohematology, hematology/hemostasis, and molecular diagnostics, plus healthcare ethics and research methods.

You will complete a background check and drug screen before entering the practicum phase, then apply your skills in three supervised advanced practicum courses at affiliated clinical laboratories. A grade of 'C' or higher is required in every course to advance. Classes are small, with a roughly 14:1 student-to-faculty ratio, and evening and weekend scheduling at select campuses is intended to fit around working professionals' schedules.
