Emergency Medical Services Professions (AAS)

• The Emergency Medical Services Professions Associate of Applied Science degree includes knowledge, skills, and behaviors necessary to recognize, assess, and manage emergencies under the supervision and direction of a physician. Students successfully completing course work in this program are eligible to take National Registry exams. Students holding paramedic certification are eligible to enter the prior learning assessment process to gain credit toward an AAS degree.
• Program Highlights
• The Lone Star College-EMSP programs are diverse and intentional in their offerings.
• The Lone Star College-CyFair program is an intense 3 semester program (Level 1 Certificate). It offers hybrid, didactic, and face to face labs with clinical experiences in both the local area and Texas Medical Center. This program is a fall start with 2 cohorts each year.
• The LSC-Montgomery program is a dynamic 4 semester program (Level 1 Certificate) that offers hybrid, didactic, and face to face labs with clinical experiences in the local area. The LSC- Montgomery program offers 2 different start times during the year, June and January, with one cohort at each start time.
• Both LSC-CyFair and LSC-Montgomery programs offer the remaining AAS courses after the completion of the Level 1 Certificate.
• The LSC-North Harris program offers the traditional AAS format of integrating both the paramedic coursework and academic coursework each of the 5 semesters. This program offers face to face, didactic, and labs with clinical experiences in the local area.
• Credentials and Careers
• Graduates can expect career opportunities within the field of emergency medicine.
• Job opportunities are available with local EMS agencies, EMS transfer services, physician offices, Emergency Departments, Free-Standing ER's, and Fire Services.
• Transferability
• General education courses (Core) are designated for easy transfer to Texas public institutions and applicable to requirements at private and out-of-state institutions.
• Technical coursework may be transferable to other institutions.
• Please consult with a Program Advisor for more information about transferability.

• There are no academic prerequisites prior to enrolling in EMSP 1501-Emergency Medical Technician and EMSP 1160-Clinical-EMT courses. Paramedic Level 1 Certificate students should be aware that application processes may be competitive and should consider taking courses toward the AAS prior to beginning advanced studies.
• Students must make a formal application to the EMSP department to pursue course work beyond EMSP 1501-Emergency Medical Technician / EMSP 1160-Clinical-EMT .
• Applicants who are currently certified at the EMT level or have completed EMSP 1501-Emergency Medical Technician / and EMSP 1160-Clinical-EMT - Clinical - EMT but who do not hold EMT certification may be provisionally accepted.
• Students are only accepted for advanced coursework at LSC CyFair, LSC Montgomery, and LSC North Harris. Students should contact the program for start dates. An application portfolio must be submitted according to the deadlines established by the EMSP department of each college program.
• Final acceptance into the program is contingent upon a satisfactory background check and drug screen (as required by clinical facilities) that is completed by a college-approved agency at the student's expense. Clinical facilities also require proof of personal medical insurance and additional immunizations.
• Admission into the AAS degree plan requires college readiness, as defined in the college catalog. Admission to the certificate program does not require college readiness.
• Students must hold a National Registry EMT certification or Texas Department of State Health services certification as an EMT or AEMT prior to beginning clinicals.
• Students gaining admission will be notified at the end of the application process.

• This award requires 60 credit hours in total; the course list below is the 19 credit hours specific to it.
• Lone Star College reports 1776 contact hours for this award.
• Where the course list shows "Choose N credit hours", those courses are the options for one elective slot, not additional requirements.

• Comprehend, apply, analyze, and evaluate information relative to the role of an entry-level Paramedic.
• Demonstrate technical proficiency in all of the skills to fulfill the role of a Paramedic.
• Demonstrate personal behaviors consistent with the profession and employer expectations of a Paramedic.

• Tuition shown is the in-district rate of $111.00 per credit hour for 60 credit hours.
• Out-of-district Texas residents pay $249.00 per credit hour ($14,940.00); international and out-of-state students pay $313.00 per credit hour ($18,780.00).
• Lab fees vary by course and liability insurance, uniforms and supplies vary by program, so Lone Star College publishes no all-in total for this award. Tuition above excludes them.
• Financial aid and payment plans are available to most students.
• Application fee: none. Lone Star College applications are free.

• Current National Registry certification or state license at the EMT level, or higher.
• Candidates must have completed the course within the past two (2) years, and the course Program Director must verify successful course completion on the National Registry website. After January 1, 2023, candidates are required to meet CoAEMSP Recommended Student Minimum Competency (SMC) Matrix. Note: Program Directors must verify that candidates have an SMC on file for each student.

• Background checks and drug screens are done through LSC approved background check vendors and are at the student's expense. EMS students must have completed the process prior to registration. Paramedic students should contact the program at the campus of interest for more information. Clinical and Field affiliates reserve the right to refuse students with positive backgrounds or drug screens. The inability to be placed in a clinical or field site will result in the inability to complete course objectives.
• If you are applying for admission to a College program or enrolling in a College program that may prepare you for an initial occupational license issued by a Licensing authority and/or if you later decide to change to a program that prepares you for an occupational license, please be advised of the following:
• An individual who has been convicted of an offense may be ineligible for issuance of an occupational license upon completion of the educational program.
• Licensing authorities that issue an occupational license to an individual who completes the educational program issue guidelines stating the reasons a particular crime is considered to relate to a particular occupational license and any other criterion that affects the decisions of the licensing authority.
• A state licensing authority that issues guidelines files those guidelines with the secretary of state for publication in the Texas Register.
• Local or county licensing authorities that issue an occupational license to an individual who completes the educational program issue guidelines related to criminal history and post the guidelines at the courthouse of the county in which the licensing authority is located or publish them in a newspaper having countrywide circulation in that county.
• Applicants should contact their respective local or county licensing authority for more details.
• An individual may request a criminal history evaluation letter regarding the personal eligibility for a license issued by a licensing authority as required by Texas Occupation Code § 53.102.
• All applicants and enrollees are encouraged to review all applicable eligibility requirements related to the respective occupational license. Questions related to eligibility requirements should be directed to the applicable licensing authority.

• Program Capstone
• The program capstone is satisfied by earning a passing score on the National Registry Paramedic Exam or obtaining Texas Department of State Health Services Certification as a paramedic.
• The Student Success Course Requirement is satisfied through successful completion of EMSP 1438 - Introduction to Advanced Practice.
