Barbering (CERT1)

• The Barbering program offers students the opportunity to learn knowledge and skill in professional barbering, including cutting, trimming, shampooing, and styling hair, trimming beards, or giving shaves.
• Program Highlights
• Currently, Lone Star College-North Harris has a partnership with Westfield High School, in Spring ISD. Only students attending Westfield High School may participate in the barbering program.
• Credentials and Careers
• The Barbering Level 2 certificate is comprised of 3 semesters and 35 credit hours. The Barbering AAS is comprised of 5 semesters and 60 credit hours. The program's licensure from Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) is provisioned through Westfield High School. Upon successful completion of the program requirements, graduates are eligible to take the state exam. Upon passing the state exam, program graduates become licensed to practice in the State of Texas.
• Graduates of the Barbering program encounter a variety of employment opportunities including working in an established barber shop, self-employment, and product sales. Salaries vary depending upon the place of employment and the graduate's skills, clientele development, and number of work hours.
• Transferability
• General education courses (Core) are designated for easy transfer to Texas public institutions and applicable to requirements at private and out-of-state institutions.
• Technical coursework may be transferable to other institutions.

• Prerequisite: Admission to the Barbering Program and current student at Westfield High School in Spring ISD.
• This award requires 35 credit hours in total.
• Lone Star College reports 1008 contact hours for this award.

• Level 1 Certificate
• Demonstrate competency in written theory and related practical application required for the completion of the Barbering program and Barbering, Class A licensing examination.
• Demonstrate proper technical, sanitation and safety procedures as required by Texas state law governing the practice of Barbering.
• AAS Degree
• Demonstrate technical proficiency equal to the requirements for Barbering, Class A position in Barbering.
• Demonstrate knowledge of proper business practices related to the successful operation of a Barbering business.

• Tuition shown is the in-district rate of $111.00 per credit hour for 35 credit hours.
• Out-of-district Texas residents pay $249.00 per credit hour ($8,715.00); international and out-of-state students pay $313.00 per credit hour ($10,955.00).
• Lab fees vary by course and liability insurance, uniforms and supplies vary by program, so Lone Star College publishes no all-in total for this award. Tuition above excludes them.
• Financial aid and payment plans are available to most students.
• Application fee: none. Lone Star College applications are free.

Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations

• Crimes involving prohibited sexual conduct or involving children as victims. Reasons: Licensees have direct contact with members of the general public, often in settings with no one else present.
• A person with a predisposition for crimes involving prohibited sexual conduct or involving children as victims would have the opportunity to engage in further similar conduct.
• Crimes against the person such as homicide, kidnapping and assault. Reasons: Licensees have direct contact with persons in situations that have potential for confrontational behavior.
• A person with a predisposition of a violent response would pose a risk to the public.
• Crimes involving illegal manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance. Reasons: Licensees work in a business establishment under their control, that is difficult to monitor with customers constantly coming and going, sometimes lingering for varied periods of time, which would provide a person with a predisposition to sell controlled substances an effective cover of their selling of controlled substances.
• Licensees have exclusive access to customers for extended periods of time providing the opportunity for persons with predisposition to sell controlled substances the opportunity to persuade the uninitiated to buy a controlled substance.
