Cosmetology (AAS)

• The Cosmetology program offers students the opportunity to learn knowledge and skill in professional hair care, nail care, and skin care. The program is approved by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations. Upon successful completion of the program requirements, graduates are eligible to take the state exam. Upon passing the state exam, program graduates become licensed to practice in the State of Texas.
• Program Highlights
• Lone Star College has innovative cosmetology campuses that offer cutting edge knowledge and skills to become a licensed practitioner. Students will begin their cosmetology journey with theory and foundation skills, primarily with manikins, and progress to live models. Throughout the course our faculty guide students to achieve their full potential. By graduation, our students gain the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to achieve licensure and salon success.
• Credentials and Careers
• The program offers degrees for the facial specialist and operator license tracks. The Cosmetology AAS Degree is a full-time, 12-month program. In about one year students can graduate, gain licensure and be working in a salon as they complete their AAS Degree.
• Graduates of the cosmetology certificate programs have many employment opportunities including becoming a hairdresser, nail technician, skin care specialist, and make-up artist. Other areas may be to become a research assistant in the cosmetology industry, a sales representative for a beauty product, or beauty editor for newspapers and magazines.
• Transferability
• General education courses (Core) are designated for easy transfer to Texas public institutions and applicable to requirements at private and out-of-state institutions.
• Technical coursework may be transferable to other institutions.
• Please consult with a program advisor for more information about transferability.

• Must submit Cosmetology Program admission application.
• Must be in disciplinary good standing at all institutions. No student will be admitted who is under disciplinary suspension status. If a student is under disciplinary suspension or transferred to an alternative program due to disciplinary actions, the student will be dropped from the college program. Any such status requires positive resolution from the other institution before a student will be considered for admission.
• A high school diploma or GED is required for admission.

• Prerequisite: Completion of Cosmetology Operator, Level 1 Certificate (35 Credit Hours)
• This award requires 60 credit hours in total; the course list below is the 21 credit hours specific to it.
• Lone Star College reports 1424 contact hours for this award.
• Where the course list shows "Choose N credit hours", those courses are the options for one elective slot, not additional requirements.

• Demonstrate competency in written theory and related practical application required for the completion of the Cosmetology program and Cosmetology licensing examination.
• Demonstrate proper technical, sanitation, and safety procedures as required by Texas state law governing the practice of Cosmetology.

• Tuition shown is the in-district rate of $111.00 per credit hour for 60 credit hours.
• Out-of-district Texas residents pay $249.00 per credit hour ($14,940.00); international and out-of-state students pay $313.00 per credit hour ($18,780.00).
• Lab fees vary by course and liability insurance, uniforms and supplies vary by program, so Lone Star College publishes no all-in total for this award. Tuition above excludes them.
• Financial aid and payment plans are available to most students.
• Application fee: none. Lone Star College applications are free.

Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation

• Crimes involving prohibited sexual conduct or involving children as victims. Reasons: Licensees have direct contact with members of the general public, often in settings with no one else present.
• A person with a predisposition for crimes involving prohibited sexual conduct or involving children as victims would have the opportunity to engage in further similar conduct.
• Crimes against the person such as homicide, kidnapping and assault. Reasons: Licensees have direct contact with persons in situations that have potential for confrontational behavior.
• A person with a predisposition of a violent response would pose a risk to the public.
• Crimes involving illegal manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance. Reasons: Licensees work in a business establishment under their control, that is difficult to monitor with customers constantly coming and going, sometimes lingering for varied periods of time, which would provide a person with a predisposition to sell controlled substances an effective cover of their selling of controlled substances.
• Licensees have exclusive access to customers for extended periods of time providing the opportunity for persons with predisposition to sell controlled substances the opportunity to persuade the uninitiated to buy a controlled substance.

• The Student Success Course Requirement is satisfied through successful completion of CSME 1501.
• The AAS General Education Requirement, EDUC 1300 Learning Framework, is satisfied through successful completion of CSME 1501 - Orientation to Cosmetology
• Program Capstone requirement is satisfied through successful completion of departmental exam
