Instrumentation Technology (CERT2)

- The Instrumentation Technology Associate of Applied Science degree program prepares graduates for entry-level careers as Instrument Technicians in the chemical processing industry. - Using state-of-the-art simulation equipment and labs, as well as hands-on applied technology training and general academic coursework, the student will develop the skills required to be a successful Instrument Technician. Students will have the option to participate in a campus-based or develop the option for an industry-based internship as the program capstone.

- The Instrumentation Technology Level 2 Certificate prepares students for field service instrumentation technicians or instrumentation fitters at the entry level.
- The Instrumentation Technology Associate of Applied Science degree program prepares graduates for entry-level careers as instrumentation and electrical technicians (I&E technician) in the chemical processing industry. The duties of an instrumentation technician vary depending upon the industry with the primary responsibility being to maintain, calibrate, troubleshoot, repair and replace process instruments. Graduates possess the technical skills and knowledge to perform these functions in petrochemical plants, refineries, power generation facilities, pharmaceutical plants, and food & beverage industries.
- Transferability
- Program graduates may further their education at Lone Star College by applying to the Bachelor of Applied Science in Energy, Manufacturing, and Trades Management.
- General education courses (Core) are designated for easy transfer to Texas public institutions and applicable to requirements at private and out-of-state institutions.

Admission Requirements and Process
- Student must demonstrate college-level readiness in reading and writing to begin the program.
- Student must be able to place into MATH 0310 or higher to begin the program and demonstrate college-level readiness in math before beginning the coursework required in the second semester of the program. Placement testing is available.

Program Learning Outcomes
- Apply critical thinking to research, evaluate, analyze, and synthesize information to solve problems related to process equipment, instrumentation, systems, and operations within the petrochemical, refining, power generation, pharmaceutical, food & beverage, and related manufacturing industries.
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills (oral and written) to ensure optimal communication with shift co-workers, first line supervisors, maintenance personnel, safety personnel, contractors, and other members of the process site team.
- Demonstrate knowledge of Instrumentation technology and apply the technical skills necessary to repair complex instrumentation equipment and systems such as industrial automatic control, distributed control & programmable logic, and instrument calibration.
- Describe the typical hazards found in process plants, basic PPE, and the requirements of regulating bodies regarding safety, health, and environmental issues (OSHA, DOT, EPA, etc.).

- Tuition shown is the in-district rate of $111.00 per credit hour for 51 credit hours.
- Out-of-district Texas residents pay $249.00 per credit hour ($12,699.00); international and out-of-state students pay $313.00 per credit hour ($15,963.00).
- Lab fees vary by course and liability insurance, uniforms and supplies vary by program, so Lone Star College publishes no all-in total for this award. Tuition above excludes them.
- Financial aid and payment plans are available to most students.

Background Check
The criminal background check is not required for admission to the program. Students must complete a background check, at the student's expense, at the end of the third semester of the program and is required for enrollment in INTC 2330 - Instrumentation Systems Troubleshooting. Please consult with the program director for more information about the background check requirement.

- Please consult with a program advisor regarding selection of the math course required in the program. Student has the option to complete MATH 1314 - College Algebra , or TECM 1303 - Technical Calculations . The selection should be made after discussion with the program advisor regarding pathways and employment opportunities.
- Students who are classified as First Time in College (FTIC) will complete EDUC 1300 - Learning Framework: First Year Experience.
