Medical Laboratory Technology (AAS)

• Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLTs) are vital healthcare detectives, uncovering and providing laboratory information from laboratory analysis that assist physicians in patient diagnosis and treatments, as well as in disease monitoring or prevention (maintenance of health).
• Program Highlights
• MLTs use sophisticated biomedical instrumentation and technology, computers, and methods requiring manual dexterity to perform laboratory testing on blood and body fluids.
• Credentials and Careers
• Lone Star College-Tomball offers a two-year Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program leading to an Associate of Applied Science degree. The MLT program includes both practical and theoretical experience in hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, parasitology, mycology, urinalysis, immunology, and immunohematology. Clinical courses included in the program provide hands-on experience in various hospital and clinic laboratories in the surrounding area. The program will be applying for NAACLS accreditation/approval.
• Student eligibility to take certification examinations may depend on whether the program achieves "serious applicant" status.
• Transferability
• General education courses (Core) are designated for easy transfer to Texas public institutions and applicable to requirements at private and out-of-state institutions.
• Technical coursework may be transferrable to other institutions.
• Please consult with a program advisor for more information about transferability.

• Have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5 in the following pre-requisite courses:
• ENGL 1301, Composition & Rhetoric I
• *For students who have taken only ENGL 1302, we will substitute ENGL 1302 for ENGL 1301 in the program application evaluation process and use the grade in ENGL 1302 for application scoring.
• PSYC 2301, General Psychology
• Any college-level Math course
• MLAB 1101, Introduction to Clinical Laboratory Science
• PHIL 2306, Introduction to Ethics
• Complete each of the above pre-requisite courses with a grade of “C” or better.
• Students must submit official transcripts from colleges attended other than LSC.

• Notes: BIOL 2401 and BIOL 2402 will be accepted and can be substituted for BIOL 2404. The higher of the two grades in BIOL 2401 or BIOL 2402 will be used for application scoring.
• CHEM 1411 will be accepted and can be substituted for CHEM 1405. The grade for CHEM 1411 will be used in application scoring
• Credit for Experiential Learning (Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) Opportunities)
• Students can earn two hours of college credit for PLAB 1223 Phlebotomy with:
• Proof of current ASCP, ASPT, or AMT phlebotomy certification, OR
• Proof of current CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) certification through American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
• Students can earn 29 hours of PLA credit for MLAB 1101, PLAB 1223, MLAB 1415, MLAB 1311, MLAB 1335, MLAB 1231, MLAB 2434, MLAB 1227, MLAB 2431, and MLAB 2401 with:
• MLT certification through American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
• *To earn their AAS, students with proof of MLT certification through ASCP would need to complete the general education courses in the degree plan (ENGL 1301, PHIL 2306, PSYC 2301, Any College Level Math, BIOL 2404, CHEM 1405), as well as the clinical courses in the degree plan: MLAB 2360, MLAB 2461, MLAB 2462.

• This award requires 60 credit hours in total.
• Lone Star College reports 1584 contact hours for this award.
• Where the course list shows "Choose N credit hours", those courses are the options for one elective slot, not additional requirements.

• Apply knowledge of entry-level skills to accurately perform testing in all areas of the medical laboratory.
• Evaluate clinical laboratory data and relate that data to various disease processes.
• Comply with laboratory safety regulations and standards.
• Demonstrate the elements of professionalism to operate as respected members of the health care team.
• Employ interpersonal communication skills in relaying laboratory test information and when interacting with patients, lab personnel and other health care professionals.

• Tuition shown is the in-district rate of $111.00 per credit hour for 60 credit hours.
• Out-of-district Texas residents pay $249.00 per credit hour ($14,940.00); international and out-of-state students pay $313.00 per credit hour ($18,780.00).
• Lab fees vary by course and liability insurance, uniforms and supplies vary by program, so Lone Star College publishes no all-in total for this award. Tuition above excludes them.
• Financial aid and payment plans are available to most students.
• Application fee: none. Lone Star College applications are free.

Graduates of the program are eligible to take the ASCP MLT certification exam.

• Completed criminal background check through CastleBranch . * Students must present a clear background check. Some convictions will prevent the applicant from ultimate acceptance into the program. The student is responsible for all fees associated with background checks. *If you are applying for admission to a College program or enrolling in a College program that may prepare you for an initial occupational license issued by a Licensing authority and/or if you later decide to change to a program that prepares you for an occupational license, please be advised of the following:
• An individual who has been convicted of an offense may be ineligible for issuance of an occupational license upon completion of the educational program.
• Licensing authorities that issue an occupational license to an individual who completes the educational program issue guidelines stating the reasons a particular crime is considered to relate to a particular occupational license and any other criterion that affects the decisions of the licensing authority.
• A state licensing authority that issues guidelines files those guidelines with the secretary of state for publication in the Texas Register.

The Medical Laboratory Technology Program reached Serious Applicant Status from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) in May 2024. NAACLS is located at 5600 N. River Road, Suite 720, Rosemont, IL, 60018.

• The Student Success Course Requirement is satisfied through successful completion of MLAB 1101, Introduction to Clinical Laboratory Science.
• The program capstone is MLAB 2462 - Clinical - Clinical/Medical Laboratory Technician.
