Associate Degree in Technology in Mechanical Engineering is an Associate Degree program offered by Mech-Tech College in Vega Baja, PR. The program takes 24 months (8 quarters) to complete, with a total tuition of $20,790.

Program Overview

The Associate Degree in Technology in Mechanical Engineering gives students the theoretical knowledge and technical skills of the tool and die making industry, with complementary practical training and an integrated technical and human formation that emphasises business skills and leadership.

Courses apply mathematics to design, produce, maintain and solve problems with products and procedures. Students operate specialised equipment — lathes, mills, grinders, hydraulic hacksaws, computerised equipment and precision measuring instruments — to repair, build or rebuild forms and dies, and learn to analyse specifications, inspect and approve finished products, and apply and build designs.

It is a 90-credit, 1,800 clock hour associate degree completed in 24 months over eight quarters, offered only at the Caguas and Vega Baja campuses: 24 credits of general education, 44 in the major, 16 in related courses and 6 of practice in industry.

What sets this Program apart

  • CAD and CNC. The major includes CAD with SolidWorks®, CNC with laboratory, and hydraulics and pneumatics.
  • Dies from design to construction. A 6-credit dies design and construction laboratory sits at the heart of the sixth quarter, after lathe, milling and advanced fabrication.
  • Toward supervision. The catalog prepares graduates to work as tool and die makers and to hold supervisory and administrative positions in the industry.
  • Practice in industry. The eighth quarter is a 6-credit practice in industry.

What to expect as a Mech-Tech College student

Mech-Tech College received its operating license in July 1984 and began operating that September in Caguas, founded to train technicians in metals, electricity and mechanics and later in electronics and refrigeration. It now teaches at five Puerto Rico campuses — Caguas, Vega Baja, Bayamón, Mayagüez and Ponce — and runs a branch in Orlando, Florida as Mech-Tech Institute.

Programs pair theory with shop and laboratory practice. Academic courses are grouped at 20 to 30 students and laboratory courses at 15 to 20. Students wear the program uniform and buy their own textbooks and materials, which the catalog estimates at $200 to $400 depending on the program. For programs that lead to a license, Mech-Tech runs an exam review at the end of the program.

Instruction at the Puerto Rico campuses is in Spanish. The catalog notes that completing a program in a language other than English may reduce employability where English is required.
