Barber Crossover is a Certificate program offered by Mississippi Barber Academy in Jackson, MS. The program takes 20 weeks full time or 30 weeks part time to complete, with a total tuition of $7,800.
Program Overview
The Barber Crossover Program is designed to give people who hold a valid Mississippi Cosmetology license the opportunity to also become licensed barbers. Licensed cosmetologists take an additional 600 clock hours of training to learn the skills needed to be licensed in barbering.
Students are prepared to pass the state licensing exam, which consists of a written and a practical examination. With a barber license added to a cosmetology license, a graduate becomes eligible to work in both a state-licensed cosmetology salon and a state-licensed barber shop.
The program runs 20 weeks for full-time students and 30 weeks for part-time students, with a minimum total of 600 clock hours. Graduates receive a certificate of completion and are then eligible to take the Mississippi barber licensing examination.
What sets this Program apart
- Built on the license you already hold. The course covers what barbering adds to cosmetology, with 240 hours of hairshaping by scissors, razor and clippers, and shaving, beard and mustache trimming.
- Two licenses, more places to work. Graduates can work in both cosmetology salons and barber shops.
- A professional kit is included. The $950 barbering kit, with Andis and Wahl clippers and a Viper shear set, is part of the published total.
- Many ways to learn. Lectures, demonstrations, hands-on work, group-based learning and technology-centered learning.

Career Outcomes
Licensing. Graduates apply to the Mississippi State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering for approval to take the licensing examination. The school’s website describes the examination as practical skills plus two written examinations: a state law test and a National Barbering academic examination.
Where barbers work. Most barber school graduates begin their careers in a styling atmosphere, in their hometowns or in a new city, and some go into barber styling salons. At the shop level, advancement comes in both pay and position as experience grows: specializing in services such as perming, color or skin care, moving into management, or owning a business. Licensed barbers may also teach as school instructors, work as guest artists teaching the latest cuts at shows, or join manufacturers as field representatives and technicians, or distributors as sales consultants.
Job placement assistance. The academy does not guarantee employment, but it offers professional appearance guidance, job referrals and follow-up services, and a current list of job openings is available to students and graduates on request. The school publishes no placement or licensure pass rate.
