Program Overview
Barbering is becoming one of the “hottest” professions. Mississippi Barber Academy’s Barbering Program is designed to prepare students for a rewarding, creative career with many options, and the entry-level skills and knowledge it teaches are meant to make graduates successful in the modern as well as the traditional barber shop.
The program is 1,500 clock hours: 12 months of continuous training on the day track or 18 months at night, at a maximum of 30 or 21 hours a week. Mississippi law divides the academic and practical classes approximately 60 percent clinic work and 40 percent classroom, both academic and practical application.
The academy teaches from the latest edition of Milady’s Standard Professional Barbering text and Student Workbook, and prepares students to pass the state examination given by the Mississippi State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering. On completion of all required credits and projects, and after passing the academic, practical and pre-state tests, each student receives a certificate of completion.

Career Outcomes
Licensing. Graduates apply to the Mississippi State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering for approval to take the licensing examination. The school’s website describes the examination as practical skills plus two written examinations: a state law test and a National Barbering academic examination.
Where barbers work. Most barber school graduates begin their careers in a styling atmosphere, in their hometowns or in a new city, and some go into barber styling salons. At the shop level, advancement comes in both pay and position as experience grows: specializing in services such as perming, color or skin care, moving into management, or owning a business. Licensed barbers may also teach as school instructors, work as guest artists teaching the latest cuts at shows, or join manufacturers as field representatives and technicians, or distributors as sales consultants.
Job placement assistance. The academy does not guarantee employment, but it offers professional appearance guidance, job referrals and follow-up services, and a current list of job openings is available to students and graduates on request. The school publishes no placement or licensure pass rate.
What to expect as a Mississippi Barber Academy student
Mississippi Barber Academy is devoted to training competent barber crossovers, barbers and instructors. A library of reference books, trade journals and audio-visual materials is available.
Day to day. Students wear uniform attire, bring pencils, pens, paper and a notebook, and are assigned a locker (bring a padlock with two keys). Class starts at 9:00 am for day students and 5:00 pm for night students, with a five-minute grace period. Grades are numeric, and an overall average of 85 is required.
Holidays. New Year’s Day, the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
