Teacher Training

Full time, Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm with an hour for lunch, about 20 weeks, with a 60-hour absence allowance for the whole course. Progress is evaluated at 300 scheduled hours and at the end, and you must finish within 858 scheduled hours (28.6 weeks).

Cost of the programme. The catalog prices Teacher Training at $6,705: $5,750 tuition, $555 for kit and textbooks, a $300 registration fee and a $100 application fee (the programme page shows the two fees together as $400). Hours missed beyond your 10% allowance and not made up by your scheduled end are charged at the per-hour tuition rate, $11.50 an hour. The 30-hour instructional methods course is paid separately to its instructor.

Paying for school. The application fee is due when you apply, the registration fee when you sign, and the balance of tuition, kit and textbooks on or before orientation day unless your aid plan says otherwise. Payment plans may be arranged, with payments due on the first business day of each month, a $10 late fee after the 10th and a $15 returned-check fee; accounts over 60 days past due lead to suspension. PB takes cash, checks, credit cards other than American Express, money orders, Title IV funds, grants, loans and scholarships, and offers no discounts on tuition. Changing between full and part time costs $25. Scholarships go to area high school students who show aptitude, and sometimes to non-traditional students, and require 90% attendance and a 70% average or part of the award is forfeited. Living-cost estimates. For aid budgeting the catalog lists monthly allowances (2026-27 marked to be determined) of $241 room and board, $166 transportation and $189 personal expenses for students living with parents, or $1,415, $406 and $469 for all others. About three-quarters of PB students receive some aid: 71% Pell Grants and 77% loans in the catalog's student figures.

Cancelling and refunds. An applicant the school does not accept is refunded in full. Cancel in writing within three business days of signing and everything but the $100 application fee is refunded, even if you have started; after that but before classes, or through your fifth class session or fifth day after enrollment, whichever is later, you get back everything except the $100 application and $300 registration fees. Once past that point the school keeps a share of total tuition based on time enrolled: 20% up to 4.9% of the course, 30% to 9.9%, 40% to 14.9%, 45% to 24.9%, 70% to 49.9%, and all of it from 50%, plus a $100 termination fee. Kits, textbooks and materials are non-refundable. Refunds are paid within 45 days, and federal aid is returned first under the return of Title IV rules.

Graduates can teach in licensed New Jersey schools; the catalog lists educator, clinic coordinator, job placement adviser and school director among the education paths. The teacher license requires a beautician or cosmetology/hairstyling license, a high school diploma or equivalent, 500 hours of specialized training, a Board-approved instructional techniques course and the examination fee.

Published outcomes. For the 2024 school year the catalog reports combined rates for all programmes: 88% graduation, 100% licensure and 91% placement. It also reports an 83% retention rate.

Finding work. Placement is free to students, graduates and salons but not guaranteed. Student Services posts openings, advises you on them and can arrange interviews, and a salon readiness programme helps you write a resume, prepare for interviews and build a portfolio.

PB Cosmetology Education Centre was founded on July 17, 1960 and is run by PB School of Beauty Culture, Inc. Its 13,000 square foot building has five self-contained junior classrooms with styling stations, sinks, dryers, laptops and projectors, a fully equipped aesthetician studio with facial beds and microdermabrasion equipment, a senior student salon with individual styling stations and retail display, a reference library, student and staff lounges with lockers, and a dispensary and laundry. Classes are capped at 25 students and taught in English. New classes may start on the first Monday of each month.

Junior and senior. Every course runs in two halves. Juniors learn in classrooms separate from the clinic, on mannequins, each other and models, and wear white; seniors work on paying clinic clients, keep up theory and state board preparation, often earn tips, and wear black (skin care students stay in white with senior pins). Before senior status you need a New Jersey student work permit, which requires a physician's signature dated within 90 days. Students can attend field trips to trade shows, supply houses and salons, sometimes for an admission or transport fee.

Attendance. You sign in and out and answer roll call at the start and end of every class; missing either costs the hours. PB expects 90% attendance and allows absences equal to 10% of your course, split between the junior and senior halves; going over can end your enrollment. There are no excused absences, whatever the documentation. You may enter late once a week: from 9:01 to 9:10 am you can go straight in, from 9:11 to 9:59 you wait until 10:00 and lose an hour, and after 10:00 you cannot attend (11:00 to 12:00 for part-time cosmetology). Coming back late from lunch ends your day. Make-up hours are limited to six a week under New Jersey rules, and a leave of absence of up to 90 days can be taken once.

Uniform. Black scrub pants, the school top and smock or lab coat from your kit, all-black leather shoes with rubber soles (all white for skin care), and a name badge every day; no hats, hoodies, leggings, jeans or open or Croc-style shoes. Out of uniform means you cannot attend. The school closes for New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas week.
