Program Overview
The Goal of the Paramedicine Associate of Applied Science degree program is to prepare Paramedics who are competent in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession. This individual possesses the complex knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Paramedics function as part of a comprehensive EMS response under medical oversight. Paramedics perform interventions with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance and serves as a link from the scene into the health care system. The Paramedicine diploma program prepares students for employment in paramedic positions in today's health services field and are not confined to ambulance services. The Paramedic diploma program provides learning opportunities that introduce, develop, and reinforce academic and occupational knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for job acquisition, retention, and advancement. The program provides opportunities to upgrade present knowledge and skills from the EMT/EMT-I 1985/AEMT levels to a paramedic level. Successful completion of the program allows the graduate to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Paramedic certification examination and apply for Georgia licensure with the State Office of Emergency Medical Service and Trauma (SOEMST) as a paramedic. Students are encouraged to complete the diploma core requirements prior to enrolling in the EMSP courses. Admission Requirements
Submit completed application and application fee Be at least 18 years of age Submit official high school transcript or GED transcript with test scores and all post-secondary transcripts in an official sealed envelope Meet assessment requirements Applicants who do not meet the regular admission requirements and are classified as learning support or provisional status must take the prescribed learning support courses prior to registering for any of the EMSP courses or general core courses. Students applying for admission to the Paramedicine diploma or degree programs must have a current EMT, EMT-I, or AEMT certification or licensure. Students with EMT or EMT-I certification/licensure will be updated on the advanced EMT modules in the first-term courses. Students may be required to complete secondary evaluations of general education competency and/or career-oriented personality traits for purposes of evaluating the predictability of such instruments for success in the EMS related programs. Students must attend a mandatory program orientation prior to registering for classes. Prospective students wishing to transfer from another technical college, or returning students who have been away from the program for more than two years, must complete a competency exam for each EMSP course transferred or carried forward. Students who have been inactive from a program for more than five years will need to complete the entire complement of EMSP courses unless they are currently licensed as paramedics. Students with other allied health credentials may receive experiential credit for some course work following a verification of competency. The amount of experiential credit may not exceed that allowed by the College. The limit in experiential credit does not apply to currently licensed paramedics seeking degree completion as described above. The College accepts credit from the College Board's College-Level Examination Program (CLEP). A grade of EXP is assigned for awarded CLEP credit. Quality points are not awarded for CLEP, therefore, courses with CLEP credit are not calculated into the GPA during the competitive admissions process.
